Arthur Joseph “Joe” Smith, 87, passed away at his home in Woburn after a long illness on Tuesday Morning, May 15. He was the husband of Avis L. (Rich) Smith.
Born and raised in East Boston, he was the son of the late Ernest, and the late Lillian (Nelson) Smith. “Joe,” as he was known to family and friends, enlisted in the United States Navy, and served during World War II. Joe later reenlisted in the Navy in 1951, and served during the Korean War. Joe and his wife had lived in Burlington and also for a time in Cocoa Beach, Florida before coming to Woburn 30 years ago. Prior to retirement, Joe was an Electrical Engineer at RCA in Burlington, which later became General Electric. He is remembered as a quiet and reserved man who loved to read.
In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by one son, Allan Smith and his wife Susan of Orono, ME; and one daughter, Allison MacDonald and her husband Gary of Woburn; and three grandchildren, Natalie Smith, Brad MacDonald, and Jack MacDonald. He is also survived by one sister, Hazel Evans of Westford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Visiting hours will be at the Graham Funeral Home, 3 Arlington Road, Woburn on Saturday from 2-4 pm, followed by a funeral service at 4:00 pm. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O.Box1000, Dept.142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.
