The North Suburban YMCA After School sites celebrated the holiday season this week with community programs and performances. The YMCA at the Altavesta celebrated the spirit of giving by finger-knitting scarves for the Woburn Council of Social Concern. “It was all the kids’ idea,” commented Site Coordinator Jenn Gould. “They really wanted to do something to benefit the community. After knitting, the children carefully wrapped the gifts and decorated the boxes to make sure they were special.”
At the YMCA site at the Joyce Middle School, children formed a choir and expressed the holiday spirit through song and dance. The choir performed four songs, including one in Spanish and one in Sign Language. Site Coordinator Amy Luckiewicz explained, “The children in our program are very diverse not only in culture but also developmental ability. We have over a dozen children on the Autism Spectrum, and our choir wanted to make sure they included a song for those kids too. They loved learning Frosty the Snow Man in sign language.”
