5T: A Baby Is Born at Grandmother's Home

Read our daily column featuring news, weather and Woburn history.

Here are five things you need to know today in Woburn:

1) An amazing birth

Infant Kevin Doucette was brought into the world last week at his grandma's Woburn home, not a hospital. According to WHDH, Jessica Doucette was visiting her mother-in-law in Woburn when she went into labor. Woburn Fire responded to the 911 call, and firefighter Kevin Flaherty — the uncle of infant Kevin's dad — helped deliver the baby. Flaherty is expected to retire from WFD in December. He told 7News that this was his first home delivery.

2) ZBA finalizes N. Woburn decision

The zoning Board of Appeals will meet tonight at 5 p.m. to finalize its decision in the N. Woburn 40B Ledges project. The ZBA denied the developer's requests and will be writing up its final decision tonight in City Hall chambers.

3) Windy!

According to the National Weather Service's specialized forecast just for Woburn, we can expect sunny skies and temps in the 60s today. But make sure to tie down anything in the yard—we could have wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour!

4) In case you missed it

A Woburn man was struck by a car while he was leaving a Pop Warner event at Leland Park Tuesday night. The man had severe injuries and was rushed to Mass General Hospital in Boston. Find out how he is doing here.

5) Headlines in history

Let's take a walk through Woburn's history, shall we? Some headlines in newspapers regarding Oct. 11 events in Woburn were:

  • 1897—Good Day For The Shoot—The annual shoot-off of the 5th Infantry in Woburn.
  • 1915—Woburn Fire Truck Tested
  • 1929—Police Capture Fugitive Cripple—While that was the headline, the Woburn brief was subtitled: In Woburn Drivers Hurt.
  • 1932—Boy, 9, Drowned in Woburn Pond
  • 1950—Woburn Man Gets Notice of Tax Fine at Front in Korea—Editor's note: This was a real headline, not an episode of MASH.
