5T: Treats For Our Troops Breaks Record

Check in with our daily column of Woburn information, events, history and more!

Here are five things you need to know today in Woburn:

1) Treats For Our Troops

The holiday charity initiative Treats For Our Troops was deemed a success by organizers. The group collected 606 boxes for soldiers! That's about 6,666 pounds of candy donated—more than double the amount from last year.

2) Veterans job program

The Career Place in Woburn will hold a special job program for veterans this Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. The program will focus on building relationships in the workplace and networking. Topics will include: relationship building and the benefits, who to contact for advice and networking, and keeping an open mind when developing a job search strategy.

3) Cooldown expected

According to the National Weather Service's specialized forecast just for Woburn, our summer break is just about over. The NWS says our temperatures will drop from the 70s to the low 50s today and will reach 44 degrees by dinnertime. Expect some rain in the morning before lunch and clouds the rest of the day.

4) In case you missed it

We had a few police-related stories posted yesterday, including a teen who was hospitalized after he was stabbed several times in downtown Woburn; two men who took a 21st birthday party too far and were placed in protective custody (one man was found passed out in a hotel lobby, the other was under several pizza boxes); and an armed robber who hit the DB Mart in Woburn tried to hit a store in Stoneham Sunday night.

5) Headlines in history

Let's take a walk through Woburn's history, shall we? Some headlines in newspapers regarding Nov. 13 events in Woburn were:

  • 1896—Caucus Result in Doubt—The Republican Caucus was held in Woburn.
  • 1924—Autopsy Today May Set Girl's Father Free—A 50-year-old father may be set free if autopsy proves his 14-year-old daughter committed suicide and was not shot by the man.
  • 1925—Winchester Man Crushed Between Freight Cars—Accident occured at Broad and Union streets.
  • 1954—Woburn Throws Marblehead for 20-7 Setback—Scoring ace was out three days with flu.

We did, Walt! :) And I've already notified Treats For Our Troops that we'd love to work with them again next year, so you'll definitely see more pick-up times next Halloween season! :)
