A 'Bittersweet' Weekly Treat

New bakery open Fridays only.

Bittersweet

Run by sisters Atosa and Panta, is a wholesale bakery which sells pastries and baked goods to local coffee shops and businesses in the area and makes custom designed cakes for birthdays, weddings and other events. Situated in off of Washington Street, Bittersweet had been open by appointment only but in May of 2011 the sisters decided to make their baked goods available to the public. They also expanded their offerings to salads, sandwiches, pizzas and drinks. Bittersweet is only open on Fridays from 8am to 2pm. While this is a short window of time, it’s worth making your Friday mornings free in order to visit Bittersweet and pick up some of their delicious goods.

The sisters grew up in Dubai and traveled the world developing a taste for all types of cuisine along the way. They started Bittersweet in 2009 after they saw that the Boston area was missing a good European style bakery. They loved baking ever since they were children and as adults they strive to make baked goods that are high in quality with in-season and all-natural ingredients. They are also committed to developing gluten-free recipes which result in pastries that taste just as good as those with gluten.

Bittersweet is truly a gem and this is made apparent just by the quality of their offerings. Everything is made from scratch and the sisters are continually trying out new and unique recipes.

Bittersweet is known for their sweet and savory scones; everything from Bacon & Egg Scones, Caramelized Onion & Parmesan Scones to Lemon Scones, Raspberry Scones and their popular candy bar scones made from Milky Ways or Twix Bars. Their cupcakes range from Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Caramel Pecan to seasonal selections like Mango Cream and Strawberry Pistachio. They also make croissants, fruit tarts, mousse cups, tiramisu, danishes, brownies and so much more.

Looking for lunch? Stop by Bittersweet before 2 pm. They have weekly specials that frequently change, so call ahead or check out their specials menu outside their front door. You can pick up a salad, pressed or cold sandwich or handmade individual pizza and add a bag of chips or a drink to round out your meal. We highly recommend their pressed sandwiches served with homemade fresh baguette. Their Pesto-Chicken and Chicken Salad with Cranberries have gotten rave reviews and this Woburnite particularly loves their Eggplant sandwich with mozzarella, roasted red peppers and basil/garlic aoli. You’ll want to add one of their specialty drinks, such as their Mint Lemonade (sweetened with honey) or their Canatalope Cooler, to your lunch.

If you have a special event, contact Bittersweet for more information about their custom-designed cakes or for any of their sweet or savory goods for catering. Also check out their highly active Facebook page where they post pictures of their latest offerings and encourage fans to help them decide which pastry to try next.
