Candidate for City Council Alderman.

The following text was provided by the candidate as an election announcement.

Ward 4 Alderman Michael Anderson is pleased to announce his candidacyfor re-election.

I have been honored to represent the residents of Ward 4 over the last two years. As Alderman, it has been my good fortune to meet and correspond with numerous Ward 4 residents who have expressed their great pride in Woburn and their desire that Woburn remain safe, affordable and provide great services to its’ residents. I share that vision for myself and my family.

I have been practicing law for twenty years and the most gratifying part of the practice is helping clients. I feel the same way about my public service. I have had the opportunity to meet many of the residents of Ward 4 and no phone call or e-mail goes unanswered. I am happy to assist with constituent needs and am gratified that most issues can be resolved very quickly with a few phone calls or a site visit. It has been very rewarding to learn how helping my neighbors with “small” issues often times has a larger impact. Streetlights, snow removal, water quality, housing, planning and parking are examples of basic services, and I have made the effort to develop good working relationships with Woburn’s Department Heads to consistently provide these services to the satisfaction of Ward 4 residents.

Finances affect the provision of all municipal services. While state aid to Woburn has been reduced, we have been able to provide Woburn residents with a financial break by lowering residential real estate tax rates and reducing our water and sewer rates without cutting services. We continue to enjoy unparalleled trash and recycling services and our schools do not charge extracurricular user fees. Many of our neighbors in surrounding cities and towns have not been as fortunate.

As my daughter joins the freshman class at Woburn High School, I am mindful of the educational obligations the City owes to all its children and the need for the City to begin planning a Hurld-Wyman School.
I am very proud to have worked with the residents of Woburn, the Mayor and the City Council in acquiring seven acres at Spence Farm as well as the larger Whispering Hill parcel. This land provides Woburn with open space for recreational purposes for generations to come and helps preserve the city aquifer and assist with storm water management. It has been gratifying to see the efforts of the newly-formed Agricultural Committee, and its extremely dedicated members and volunteers create and run the Farmer’s Market at Spence Farm. I encourage all Woburn residents to take advantage of this special resource on
Sunday mornings throughout the summer.

Woburn is a great city in a prime location for both residential and commercial development. As a member of the City Council I will continue to insure that any such development proceeds under a ‘good neighbor policy’ with projects taking our neighborhoods and traffic concerns into consideration.

I am in Woburn 24/7 and available to the constituents of Ward 4 at all times. Not only am I a resident of Woburn, but I also work here—at 42 Pleasant Street—across from the library, two doors down from City Hall.
