Farewell Spuds

After more than twenty years in business, the Montvale Avenue restaurant closed its doors for the final time Saturday night.

The cold fiscal climate has claimed another beloved business here in Woburn. Last Saturday night, Spuds served its last family buffet in the dining room and topped off its last beer at the bar.

“It has been a great 20 years and we have enjoyed our time and experiences in the Woburn area," said Bruce Spaulding, the owner of the Spuds restaurant chain, adding that the Saugus and Rowley locations will remain open.

"Obviously, this is a sad day for myself and everyone at Spuds," said Spaulding. "This is not what we want to be doing, but we have no control over the property owner."

Spaulding said he was sorry that the restaurant's closing meant the end of an era for many residents.

"The worst part about it all is the people that have been coming to Spuds in Woburn for years or even decades," he said. "There are a lot of memories for myself, customers, and staff.  Lots of people have started lifelong relationships at Spuds in Woburn. I am very thankful to all of the staff in Woburn for their service and efforts all the way to the end.”

Woburn Patch took part in the "last call" at Spuds Saturday night to talk to those that have called Spuds home for the past twenty years. Check out our video at right.

Spuds was a great place to work. Everyone was so close to each other and we all had fun working there. It was a sad last night but there will be plenty of happy memories....
