Woburn Fire quickly extinguishes small fire Saturday afternoon.
A small fire on Rifle Range Road was quickly extinguished by Woburn Fire Saturday afternoon.
According to Woburn Fire, firefighters knocked down a small interior fire in a rifle range by 1:10 p.m. Saturday.
The fire was inside the rifle range, which is off of Salem Street. The range is operated by the Massachusetts Rifle Association.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Woburn Fire responded to a report of a smoke condition in a building at the end of Rifle Range Road. According to reports, firefighters found a small fire inside a firing range.
At 1:15 p.m., firefighters were overhauling the fire and checking for extension.

Eeep! Nice job, guys. Rifle range fires can be especially scary because of the risk posed by gunpowder.

I hadn't realized it was on the Loeb Range berm. When I heard it was in the range, I assumed the worst. Nobody like ammunition cooking off.

Not bad considering one of the fire engines was out of service being broken and the chief wouldn't put the spare engine in service. And no extra manpower on due to the storm. The police and Dpw have added extra men. No fire engine in central square. 5 months and counting till he retires. Maybe then the citizens will be safe....

Donald, while I appreciate your help on this one, I fully understand the concept of breech obturation. The rounds would rupture rather 'cook off' in the classic sense.
I used the wrong term. But if I were a first responder, I would still be leery of explosives near a fire.

The amount of ammunition at the rifle range (if any at all) would be a small amount at best, since no one stores their firearms or ammunition there. Everyone is required to take out what you bring in. So yes there is that danger, but it is minimal. But Woburn FD are the best there is. So they know what they are dealing with. Good job as usual.
