Five Things You Need To Know Today, Aug. 2

Final Babe Ruth game tonight.

Here are five things you need to know today:

1) I've seen sun and I've seen rain

Looks like we'll have a mixed bag of weather today, according to the National Weather Service. A little sun... A little rain... A little thunder. The NWS pinpoints shower and thunderstorms to around 1 p.m. with a 20 percent chance of rain. Temperatures will likely be in the high-80s.

2) Fun with meetings

The city's Recreation Commission will meet tonight in the City Hall Engineering conference room at 7 p.m. Several items are on the agenda, including: summer programs, the city pools, Whispering Hill, the outdoor movie program, family night and the Recreation Wellness Director position.

3) Event spotlight

The Babe Ruth Woburn Tanners will be playing tonight at Ferullo Field at 8 p.m. It is the team's last game on the schedule. They will play against the Reading Rockets.

4) In case you missed it

5) The South finally admits defeat

On this day in 1865, the C.S.S. Shenandoah finally accepts the fact that the Civil War is over. The Confederate cruiser had set sail in October of 1864 and targeted Yankee whaling ships in the Pacific. The Shenandoah captured 32 vessels between February and August. Although the crew heard rumors that the war was over, the Shenandoah continued to fight. On Aug. 2, an English captain reported the end of the war and the cruiser began the long trip home.
