Five Things You Need To Know Today, Aug. 7
Former Recreation Director Tom Jones honored by city.
Here are five things you need to know today:
1) A delightful day
Looks like we're in for another summer stunner today. According to the National Weather Service, Woburn will have sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s, which is average for this time of year. You can also expect a light wind in the afternoon to cool you off just a bit.
2) Former Recreation Director Honored
The city recently dedicated the Rotary Bandstand at Library Park to deceased former Recreation Director Tom Jones, reported the Boston Globe. Jones served as the rec director for 34 years between 1972 and 2006. Jones was also an active Rotarian, serving as president of the club in 2003-04. Jones passed away in February of 2007, eight months after his retirement.
3) Event spotlight
The national program Spark & Hustle is coming to Woburn today. Join Tory Johnson, a Good Morning America contributor and New York Times bestselling author, for a day-long presentation and conference on enhancing small business. According to Johnson, the day promises to help women in particular learn new ways to build business and meet prospective clients, collaborators and customers. The program will be held at the Hilton Boston/Woburn hotel.
4) In case you missed it
There were several car break-ins in Woburn over the weekend, including four on Main Street and two on Capozzi Circle. Police warn residents to keep their doors locked and keep an eye out for suspicious activity. To see those reports and more, click on yesterday's Police Log.
5) 'I got friends in low places...'
On this day in 1997, Garth Brooks performed to thousands of people at Central Park in New York City. Although it was widely reported that hundreds of thousands of people attended the event, that fact was disputed years later. Brooks' fans filled the North Meadow, as well as any other open spot within earshot, for the show, which was also televised. Brooks performed some of his biggest hits, such as The Thunder Rolls and Friends in Low Places. He even did the infamous third verse of the latter!
