Five Things You Need to Know Today, Jan. 2

City Hall closed today.

 

 

Here are five things you need to know today:

 

1) Sun and clouds: The week is going to be off to a mixed start, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS expects us to see both sun and clouds today, with temperatures near 40 degrees.

 

2) New Year’s Day: City Hall and other administrative offices are closed today in observance of the New Year’s holiday. Trash pick-up will be delayed by one day this week.

 

3) Event spotlight: Mayor Scott Galvin will be inaugurated into office for his second term tonight at Woburn Memorial High School. The inauguration will begin at 7 p.m. Also tonight, several Woburn Police officers will be sworn-in to new positions tonight.

 

4) In case you missed it: The Shamrock School proudly announced that a team of fifth-graders took first place in an online math competition earlier this month. Check out the story here!   

 

5) Scotland stampede: On this day in 1971, 66 soccer fans were killed in Glasgow, Scotland after a football match. The fans were killed as they all attempted to leave out of the same stairwell after a late goal in the game. There were several reported injuries due to the stadium stairs over the years. In 1971, 65 men, one woman were killed and another 145 were injured.
