Five Things You Need To Know Today, July 31
What do Kermit the Frog and Jimmy Hoffa have in common? They're both in today's column...
Here are five things you need to know today:
1) Near perfect
Looks like we're in for another winner today! According to the National Weather Service, we can expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 77 degrees. Expect a nice light wind to ruffle your feathers a bit, as well. Enjoy it while it lasts, we may have some thunderstorms overnight and later this week.
2) Get involved
Do you want to get involved in city politics? Or just the city in general? Check out the official Woburn website, which updates its meeting schedule regularly. On tap for today: Board of Registrars of Voters, 9:30 a.m.; Woburn Retirement System, 8:30 a.m.; and School Committee Finance Subcommittee, 5:30 p.m.
3) Event spotlight
The Muppets! Woburn Patch loves the Muppets and the most recent movie was one of our favorites. You can catch it under the stars tonight with family and friends as part of the city's Recreation Department Family Movie Mania Series. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and set up early, the film begins at 8 p.m. at Library Park. And don't forget some money for the ice cream man!
4) In case you missed it
Woburn Police had a relatively quiet weekend, with several reports of harassment, disputes and accidents. But a call for a man passed out in a stairwell was of note: The man was completely naked and drunk. He did put on his pants before he was taken into custody. The weekend police log is here.
5) The Hoffa 'riddle' begins
On this day in 1975, James Riddle Hoffa disappears from Detroit and is never heard from again. The 'riddle' of the labor leader's death remains unsolved today, as some believe he was killed by the Mafia, while others believe his death was a conspiracy. Hoffa was imprisoned for bribery in 1967 until his sentence was commuted in 1971. At the time of his disappearance, Hoffa was planning to come back to the Teamsters and fight a court restriction that said he could not work with unions until 1981.
