Five Things You Need To Know Today, Sept. 12
Students looking for YES hours should read today's 5T.
Here are five things you need to know today in Woburn:
1) Event spotlight
It's a special night at the Farmers' Market tonight. Head over to Spence Farm at 6:30 p.m. for a special presentation on how to preserve your summer harvest. Learn techniques for canning, pickling and even freezing and drying.
2) YES service hours
Woburn Memorial High School students looking for "YES" community service hours are invited to take part in the Middlesex GBS fun run at Horn Pond this weekend. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:45 a.m.
3) You are my sunshine...
According to the National Weather Service, we can expect more sunshine for the city today. Temperatures will rise into the 80s, and we'll enjoy a light wind this afternoon.
4) In case you missed it
Yesterday was an emotional day for many, as we remembered the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington D.C. and western Pennsylvania. Blogger David Crowley wrote a wonderful piece as he reflected on the past while walking around Horn Pond. Read his post here.
5) The busing of Boston
On this day in 1974, violent riots broke out in areas of Boston due to the court-ordered "busing" of African-American children into predominantly white schools and vice versa. Buses were hit with bottles, bricks and eggs, and police wore combat gear while they controlled the riots. Many parents of both races kept their children home. The story of busing has been told several times, including the book All Souls, a great read for anyone who hasn't picked it up.
