Five Things You Need to Know Today, Sept. 15

Parent support group begins meeting tonight.

Today is Thursday, Sept. 15. Here are five things you need to know:

1) Here comes the rain again: The National Weather Service is expecting some rain today, with thunderstorms possible at 3 p.m. Temperatures will be in the mid 70s.

2) Parent support: The new parent support group will begin today at the Senior Center at 5:30 p.m. Although the group is held at the Senior Center, it is geared toward parents of all ages.

3) WMHS sports: Woburn Memorial High School sports are in full swing this week. Today, the Tanners’ girls’ varsity field hockey team and boys’ varsity soccer teams are in action.

4) In case you missed it: Long-time city solicitor and Woburn historian John McElhiney passed away at his home Tuesday night, after suffering from cancer. Read our tribute to John here and share your memories in the comments.

5) Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee: On this day in 1978, Muhammad Ali defeated Leon Spinks to win the world heavyweight boxing title. The boxer was also known for his unique and sometimes self-aggrandazing statements and it was after this bout that Ali now-famously proclaimed, “I am the greatest!” Ali would retire from boxing permanently in 1981. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease later in life.
