Here are five things you need to know today in Woburn:
1) Event spotlight
Have you heard of the Woburn Weight Loss Challenge? It starts today at Shape Up Woburn on Main Street. You can register today and get started on your way to losing weight and getting in shape. A free zumba class is going to be held for members of the challenge every Thursday at 10 a.m. Click here for more info!
2) New face at Joyce
When kids walk into the Joyce Middle School today, they'll meet their new assistant principal—Taylor Wrye. The last name is pronounced "rye" (like the bread!)
3) Lose the rain, keep the heat
According to the National Weather Service, we'll see some fog this morning, but it should be a clear day for the most part. The NWS is forecasting a partly sunny day with temperatures in the 80s. We'll even get a nice, calm breeze in the afternoon.
4) In case you missed it
The Beacon Grille restaurant announced what charities would benefit from the eatery's proceeds. Many of the charities are right here in Woburn. Read all about it here.
5) Thoreau leaves the woods
On this day in 1847, Henry David Thoreau leaves the woods and moves in with the Emersons in Concord. Thoreau is most known for his series of essays called Walden (or Life in the Woods), which he wrote while living in a shack in the woods for two years. In addition to Walden, Thoreau wrote several transcendentalist essays, as well as Civil Disobedience, a piece based on his time in jail for refusing to pay taxes. Thoreau died in 1862.
