NWS: Severe Thunderstorms Heading Towards Woburn

The National Weather Service is tracking strong storms heading towards the area and is advising people to get inside.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement in advance of some strong thunderstorms likely to hit the Woburn area.

The statement says a line of strong thunderstorms capable of producing wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour and penny-sized hail extended from Danvers to Billerica is likely to move into the area around 3:45 p.m. today.

"Heavy rain may cause minor street flooding and ponding of water in low lying areas such as underpasses," the statement reads. "Do not drive through flooded roads."

There is also potential danger from lightning, the NWS states.

"This storm is producing frequent cloud to ground lighting. Get indoors or inside a vehicle now! If you are caught outside stay away from isolated tall objects such as trees. Avoid open areas such as golf courses and ball fields."

A severe thunderstorm watch is also in effect until 8 p.m. for much of the lower New England area.
