Police Officer Killed Sunday Night By Four Gunshots
Officials reveal more information into the line-of-duty death of Woburn Police Officer Jack Maguire Monday afternoon.
Woburn Police Officer John "Jack" Maguire was shot at least four times Sunday night, responding to an armed robbery attempt at Kohl's Department Store. Despite efforts to save Maguire by Woburn Fire, Maguire later died at Lahey Clinic in Burlington.
The suspect in the shooting was shot and killed by Woburn Police, and two others were taken into custody. Scott Hanwright, 19, of Wakefield, and Kevin Dingwell, 51, also of Wakfield, were arraigned earlier this afternoon in Woburn District Court.
When Police Chief Philip Mahoney responded to the report of an "officer down" Sunday night around 9 p.m., he said he "had no clue" Maguire was gravely injured.
"When I got on scene, the Fire Department was working on him in the ambulance," said Mahoney. "He was on life support at that time."
"It is very difficult to get that type of call," he said. "I thought I'd never see [a line-of-duty death] in my career. I saw how my young officers responded, senior officers responded, many tears at the station today."
Maguire responded to a report of an armed robbery attempt at Kohl's Department Store Sunday night and knew that an officer was already pursuing a subject on foot. According to prosecutor Marian Ryan, Maguire blocked the suspect and the two exchanged gunfire on Washington Street.
Maguire was reportedly shot four times with an unknown caliber handgun, Ryan said.
"It was almost like the Wild West," said Mahoney.
According to Ryan, it is a "personal preference" by officers whether a patrolman wears protective Kevlar bullet-proof body armor.
Ryan said that the crime was "well-planned" by the suspects.
"This is a situation where clearly individuals took advantage of the weather, the reduced amount of traffic on the road, for their own greed," said the prosecutor. "They carefully rehearsed and choreographed this crime."
Ryan said the suspects arrived at Kohl's at the exact moment employees were removing the diamond jewelry from the counter and placing it into a safe for the night. Ryan and Mahoney confirmed customers were in the store at the time of the attempted robbery.
"Officer Maguire behaved heroically in responding up there, knowing there was a weapon and the store had been robbed and that another officer was in foot pursuit," said Ryan.
The prosecutor said that the investigation is currently ongoing and "very active."

Just wondering what gave the 2 suspects the right not to have to appear in the court room in front of every police officer, family member, citizen of woburn etc and to top it all off be allowed to cover their faces?????? Obviously our judicial systems is in favor of continuously protecting the rights of the a murderer even when they are caught in the act of a crime!

When are the courts going to stop releasing career criminals who repeatedly offend? Jack lost his life heroically defending all of us from a predator well known to the courts. If prison space is the lame excuse for releasing more wanton murderers, perhaps we could stimulate the construction trades by building more prisons. .. . Before ''the lame excuse'' we have no money, I remind you you we have money to house the presidents deadbeat ''crimallien'' aunt in public housing in a state where our Governor wants to subsidies illegals tuition and more... ...............This predictable tradgic loss of life is a clarion call for fiscal responsibility . It is not possible to bring Jack back but it is possible to prevent more needless sacrifice of our best and bravest
