Woburn Police Officer John "Jack" Maguire was shot at least four times Sunday night, responding to an armed robbery attempt at Kohl's Department Store. Despite efforts to save Maguire by Woburn Fire, Maguire later died at Lahey Clinic in Burlington.

The suspect in the shooting was shot and killed by Woburn Police, and two others were taken into custody. Scott Hanwright, 19, of Wakefield, and Kevin Dingwell, 51, also of Wakfield, were arraigned earlier this afternoon in Woburn District Court.

When Police Chief Philip Mahoney responded to the report of an "officer down" Sunday night around 9 p.m., he said he "had no clue" Maguire was gravely injured.

"When I got on scene, the Fire Department was working on him in the ambulance," said Mahoney. "He was on life support at that time."

"It is very difficult to get that type of call," he said. "I thought I'd never see [a line-of-duty death] in my career. I saw how my young officers responded, senior officers responded, many tears at the station today."

Maguire responded to a report of an armed robbery attempt at Kohl's Department Store Sunday night and knew that an officer was already pursuing a subject on foot. According to prosecutor Marian Ryan, Maguire blocked the suspect and the two exchanged gunfire on Washington Street.

Maguire was reportedly shot four times with an unknown caliber handgun, Ryan said.

"It was almost like the Wild West," said Mahoney.

According to Ryan, it is a "personal preference" by officers whether a patrolman wears protective Kevlar bullet-proof body armor.

Ryan said that the crime was "well-planned" by the suspects.

"This is a situation where clearly individuals took advantage of the weather, the reduced amount of traffic on the road, for their own greed," said the prosecutor. "They carefully rehearsed and choreographed this crime."

Ryan said the suspects arrived at Kohl's at the exact moment employees were removing the diamond jewelry from the counter and placing it into a safe for the night. Ryan and Mahoney confirmed customers were in the store at the time of the attempted robbery.

"Officer Maguire behaved heroically in responding up there, knowing there was a weapon and the store had been robbed and that another officer was in foot pursuit," said Ryan.

The prosecutor said that the investigation is currently ongoing and "very active."
