Polls Give Markey Double Digit Lead in Senate Race

A look back at the highlights as candidates campaign for U.S. Senate.

Two polls last week show double digit leads for U.S. Rep. Edward Markey over his Democratic opponent U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch in the race for U.S. Senate.

Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll last week showed Markey (D-Malden) leads Lynch (D-South Boston) by 29.5 percentage points among potential Democratic primary voters.

The poll also shows Markey is leading over all three Republican candidates.

Fifty percent of those polled said they would vote for Markey, while 20.5 percent said Lynch, giving Markey a 29.5 percent lead. Twenty-three percent said they were unsure about how they plan to vote.

Markey and Lynch face off in the April 30 Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State.

On the Republican side, Markey also led, according to the poll, coming in 19 points over former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez, 17.2 percent over former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and 23.2 percent over State Rep. Dan Winslow.

The poll also showed Lynch leading over all three Republican candidates: 18 percent over Gomez, 17 percent over Sullivan and 24.5 percentage points over Winslow.

A second poll last week, this one by the League of Conservation Voters, which is supporting Markey in the special election, also shows him with a double digit lead. The poll shows Markey at 42 percent, with Lynch at 28 percent.

AFL-CIO not endorsing in the primary

Both Lynch and Markey continue to bring in endorsements and seem to be splitting union support, however, neither candidate will get the backing of the state’s largest labor organization. The AFL-CIO has decided not to endorse in the Democratic primary.

The Boston Herald reported this week that Steven Tolman, Massachusetts AFL-CIO president, said the union will work to defeat whichever Republican candidate wins the GOP primary.

GOP candidates kick off campaigns, national TV weighs in

With just a month and a half until the primary, the candidates are wasting no time campaigning, building teams and putting their all in the sprint toward the April Primary.

Republican Candidate Michael Sullivan officially kicked off his campaign Saturday in Abington. This week we also learned Sullivan hired Richard Tisei’s former campaign  manager to manage his campaign for U.S. Senate. His camp also includes former State Rep. Karyn Polito as his “campaign chairman,”

Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) spent some time with Attleboro Patch when he came through town to meet and greet potential voters.

Winslow also got himself some national attention when MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow pointed out a discrepancy when he blasted his party last weekend for holding a straw poll at the Danversport Yacht Club. Maddow pointed out Winslow has been on the board of directors of a yacht and tennis club.

Lynch says no to advertising on WCVB-TV due to contract dispute

Congressman Lynch Friday told WCVB-TV station president and general manager Bill Fine he will not advertise on the station due to a contract dispute between the television station and its workers.

According to a statement released by the Lynch campaign, Members of IBEW Local 1228, which represents more than 60 camera operators, editors, and technicians at WCVB, have been working under an extended contract for nearly two years. The last contract between the union and WCVB ended in July 2011.

Endorsements keep pouring in

This week Lynch received support, with endorsements from Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch, Norfolk County Sheriff Michael Bellotti, State Senator John F. Keenan, Majority Leader Ron Mariano, State Rep. Bruce Ayers and State Rep. Tackey Chan.

Endorsements for Markey this week included the National Wildlife Federation Action Fund, the Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund and the Advocacy Group MoveOn.

Both party primary elections are scheduled for April 30. The special election is scheduled for June 25.

just thinking?: you're not thinking. Didn't learn your lesson bringing up that nonsense when Senator Warren was running against Brown? I don't think either one of them eat enough oatmeal for breakfast. Let's beat that one for a while . How about we check his birth certificate.

The job is in Washington DC. That's where I want him during the week. When someone brings up assine stuff like that , it means they have no issues

Time for Tyler's demographics to be published. National origin, source of income, sourceof assets, occupation, et cetera would be fascinating.
"Just thinking" is directly on point. He doesn't live here. It's up to his constitutents, preferably legal, working constituents, to determine if this appropriate. Back to the far suburbs near NH please. It is hard to understand what happens here if you aren't here.

Whomever the Democrats appoint their nominee will win this election going away despite their shameless corruption and obsession with ever increasing taxes. One would think the liberals who post here would be less angry and more upbeat - they're winning.

The extreme left and extreme right have been fully assimilated. They don't know how to do anything BUT be angry, even when they're winning. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to Capitol Hill.

Ed Markey doesn't care about the community. I've met him twice and he does his Wizard of Oz routine, but you must go fetch the broom of the wicked witch and he'll get back to you. They have an answer for everything... "we're a legislative body"...blah blah blah. Hey, Ed...when people have to VOTE for you it is your JOB to engage in PUBLIC SERVICE, not self-service. I betcha if there was a problem festering right underneath Ed Markey's office he wouldn't lift a finger to correct it. Oh, wait a minute...there is! You can't believe the run around Congressman Markey's office gave me until I said "HEY, you are NOT a private business, you are working FOR THE PEOPLE, give me the information" and the woman backed down and gave me the information I requested. That's how they play the game. They intimidate callers until you stand firm and put them in their place. That's how I was treated at Ed Markey's office.

Ed Markey is the best one in the field. Experience , professionalism , grasp of the issues, dedicated , responsive , progressive. US Senator Markey(D) has a good ring to it.
As to the Republicans , Michael Sullivan is or was the favorite of the far right. The day after certifying signature to get on the ballot, Sullivan discloses that he is in favor of same sex marriage. His Rightie signature gatherers must be rip. Brown did the same thing to the tea party supporters, after attending their rallies and waving to the crowd. Can't trust those Repubs. Winslow , another country club Republican , and Gomez , a RINO. Yep, it's Markey; Lynch isn't bad either . Both will represent the people , not the well off

The guy has been in Congress 36 years and less than half of Massachusetts residents know who he is. That is progressive. So is his effort to stop natural-gas exports that would lead to higher home heating fuel costs for "the people". He also co-authored Obama's big cap-and-trade bill that would have crushed families and business with huge price increases on all types of fossil-fuel energy sources. I suppose for politicians like Markey and Obama sticking it to "the people" with higher energy costs is only good when you're shoving windmills, solar and ethanol energy down their throats.

Will the powers that be in the Democratic Party of Massachusetts allow a primary election this time around or will they just decide for the people that he is the one, same as they did with Warren last year?

Rob C: there is a Democrat Primary for the US Senate seat on April 25, 2013. 2 Democrat candidates .There was a Democrat Primary when Elizabeth Warren ran. She initially had 5 opponents, some dropped out for lack of support, funding, etc.
On the Republican side , Bielat dropped out because he could not fund raise to get 150K to pay signature gathers. Delusional Tagg Romney was collecting signatures but never announced. Some aristiocratic Republican from Nantucket faded into the wilderness. Three Republican rope -a-dopes left, all former something- former US prosecutor, former Navy SEAL, former moderator. In about 50 days they are still going to be former.
There are contested primaries. I don't know where you come up with this off the wall stuff.

Really Tyler,
You might want to tell DeFranco. I think she missed out on the whole primary thing last year.
Even though she had the signatures required to be on the ballot for the Senate primary in 2012, the Dem party got together in Springfield and decided that because Obama had decided Warren was to be it, she was not allowed to be on the ballot and there would be no primary.
She had the signatures, it should have been up to the voters to decide who was to be on the November Ballot.
"Democracy" at its finest, only in MA or IL are the people not allowed to choose.

If I had to choose right now between Markey and Lynch, I would vote for Lynch.
I refuse to vote for somebody who claims to be a Democrat but is actually a member if the Socialist party.

I don’t know anything about any of the R’s to make a decision on them yet.

Hey Rob C: here's the rules everyone knows going in for Party candidates . If you do not want to run with a Party, go it yourself . Get the required 10,000 certified signatures from Unenrolled or Democrat signatures ( no R's or Libertarians or Green Party) for a General Election for the Democrat Party. Delegates to the convention are elected in each party's town caucus, made up of registered Dems ( no one else allowed in the room)only from each town , who elect their own delegates, minority and women, youth alloted seats .Those delegates go to the convention to represent their Party. There is a convention held. Each candidate must get 15% of the Party delegates to get on the Primary ballot( otherwise you get every tom , dick and harry). Anyone getting 15% , gets on the primary ballot. DeFranco did not get 15%. Then there is a Democrat Primary , one winner, and then that winner represents their Party in the General Election. Been this way since 1920. No back room deals . The delegates vote. It's the Democrat's business, not yours.

No back room deals? Going into it she had about 30percent intending to vote for her and then the Democrat machine kicked in. Because Obama had hand picked her for the job and they were strong armed into changeing thier vote. Dont believe me go look up old Herald or Globe articles from around that time last year.

Ed Markey - man of the people

Ed Markey- climate change advocate

Three years ago, my old oil furnace crapped out. I figured it was time to switch to natural gas. Cleaner burning, more efficient, etc.

Problem - gas company wanted $1500 to replace the line into my house since it had been out of use. Installation plus new furnace looked to be about $6000. Becoming a bit costly.

I know, I'll email Ed Markey, surely there is a program in place to help homeowners upgrade their old, inefficient heating systems, right?

One week later, I get an email from a staffer, sorry, nothing right now.

Billions of dollars for corporations like Solyndra, nothing for the regular working guy. This sums up the career of Ed Markey.

The money wasted on all their "green" ventures could have converted the entire northeast to natural gas, doing much more good for the citizenry and the environment.

Mark, there were several programs in place to help homeowners upgrade their old inefficient heating systems. Where were you when eastern Mass. utilities offered FREE (!) gas furnaces to replace old wasteful oil burners? That program was in place for at least a year, possibly two. I swapped out a 30-year-old undersized oil furnace for an efficient gas furnace at no cost except for installation. That was connected to a "SuperStor" hot water tank that also had a rebate....

You can't blame Ed Markey for you own inability to sieze the day....

That doesn't even deserve a proper response. When your job is in the District, you'll probably spend MOST OF YOUR TIME IN THE DISTRICT.

Do you think Congressmen from Alaska and Hawaii commute back and forth all the time? Come on, you've got enough of a noodle to turn on your computer. You can figure this one out.

I am not only impressed, but extremely proud of all the people writing in this column with their comments. The average person is the backbone of our elective process.

WE DO COUNT !! And on election day, April 30th, your vote will send the hierarchy of the democratic party a clear message. We are the people, we are not sheep for you to lead, we will not allow you to insult our intelligence and choose for us, this is our government...not yours, and we demand respect everyday not just during elections when politicians remember 'how to count' !!

Keep up the work people ....we are never too busy to pay a little attention to those who are watching 'our store'.
