A 15-year-old Woburn teen was hospitalized with serious injuries suffered in a stabbing late Sunday night.

According to police, the teen was stabbed several times on his torso. One puncture wound also collapsed the teen’s lung, said police. He was transported to Mass General Hospital by ambulance.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday night, Woburn Police were called to the area of Campbell Street for a report of a stabbing. When officers arrived, the victim told police he was stabbed by a man “he had never met before” and the man “started a fight with him for no reason.”

The suspect had fled the scene before police arrived, but officers found him hiding underneath a large handicap ramp on Ellis Court. Marcus James Smith, 19, of 28 Campbell St., was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (kitchen knife) and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury (collapsed lung).

According to police, Smith cooperated with police and told officers he stabbed the teen in “self-defense.”

Police are investigating Smith’s claim that the victim and another male were arguing on the Campbell Street lawn when Smith attempted to break up the fight. Smith told police that the victim challenged him to a fight in the backyard, but because he was smaller than the victim, he used a knife.

Witnesses on scene denied knowing Smith, but the 19-year-old told police he had been living in a rented room in a Campbell Street house.

Police recovered the knife used in the fight and attempted to speak to the victim at MGH on Sunday night. The victim’s parents told police he could not speak with them.
