UPDATE: TRAFFIC ALERT: Manhole Explosion Closes Lake Avenue

The road was closed at approximately 3:30 p.m. this afternoon as officials waited for NSTAR to respond to the scene.

Monday, 4:55 p.m.—After arriving on scene at 4:36 p.m., NSTAR commissioned a Woburn Police detail as it worked on the manhole repair. 

According to Woburn Fire, firefighters were released from the scene at 4:53 p.m. by NSTAR. The power company told WFD that it would be filling the hole with water as part of the repair. 

Traffic is still delayed in the area.

Monday, 3:58 p.m.— was forced to close down part of Lake Avenue during the late afternoon commute today, after a manhole explosion.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., WFD Engine 3 and Engine 5 responded to a report of a manhole explosion. According to firefighters, a mahole cover was "partially removed" and smoke was coming from the hole in the ground.

NSTAR was notifed by Woburn Fire, but the utilities company said it could be nearly 45 minutes before a truck was able to get to the scene.

Lake Avenue from Arlington Road to Main Street, as well as the Lake and Pickering street intersection, was closed by fire officials for safety reasons and remains shut down to traffic at 4 p.m.
