Today—Tuesday, May 3—is Teacher Appreciation Day.

Half a dozen fifth-graders at the Linscott School who helped Principal Ernie Wells plant flowers outside the school Monday shared their thoughts with Woburn Patch on why they appreciate their teachers and how they show their appreciation.

A group of fifth graders at also shared their answers to the same questions, even though the school’s Parents and Teachers Together Club hold a luncheon for teachers much closer to the beginning of the calendar year, during Catholic Schools Week, explained school Principal Rita Masotta.

Some common themes emerged from the interviews. Most of the students said they appreciate their teachers because they’re teaching them things they need to know.

The students show their appreciation, they said, by being respectful, listening and doing the work their teachers request—or more.

What do teachers appreciate from their students?

“Students’ best efforts,” said Principal Wells, and extra effort when students do their homework and any school project.

Teachers do hard work every day, Wells said.

Fifth-grade teacher Mary Murgo at St. Charles School echoed Wells about what she appreciates from her students. She had her class repeat the motto they say every day in her class.

“Good, better, best. Never let it rest, ‘til the good gets better and the better, best.”

Fellow fifth-grade teacher Denise Trueira mentioned something else she really appreciates as a teacher: A note from a parent thanking her for her daily efforts.

The students from the Linscott School who answered the question, “Why do you appreciate your teacher and how do you show your appreciation?” include Jacqueline Casey, Jenn Campbell and Mayron Masotta Jr. all in the class of Amy Baker and Michelle Le, Jacey Woods and Emily Bui, all in the class of Ellen Richardson.

At St. Charles School, the students are Shaeleigh Chinian of Woburn and Julia Snider, John Kenney, Timothy Maguire and Kevin Kennedy, all in the class of Mary Murgo and Allyson Giso, Ashwin Anandakumar and Bernadette Donohoe, all of Woburn, in the class of Denise Trueira.
