Woburn Police Officer Robert DeNapoli was listed in "good condition" this morning at Lahey Clinic in Burlington after he was shot several times Tuesday, according to hospital spokesman Steve Danehy.

DeNapoli was shot while responding to an armed robbery at Musto Jewelers shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

"He received serious injuries from multiple gunshot wounds," said Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone Tuesday afternoon. "We are fully confident and expectant that he will recover from those injuries."

During the course of the response to the armed robbery, Leone said DeNapoli and another WPD officer discharged their firearms.

Woburn Police and other authorities shot and captured one suspect in a confrontation on Mayflower Road Tuesday. At least one, and possibly up to three suspects, remain at large, said Leone.

Four Corners Closed

Yesterday's incident caused the Four Corners intersection to be closed down for several hours as Woburn police, State police, two SWAT teams, and police from surrounding towns searched for the suspects. The manhunt also included a house-by-house search of the area.

Eyewitness Rick Capobianco said he heard three gunshots, a pause of about three seconds, and then three more gunshots.

"The responding officers, during the course of their duties, responded in like kind to the type of force that was visited upon them by these suspects," said Leone.

Woburn Police Chief Richard Kelley said he spoke to Officer DeNapoli at the hospital briefly.

In December, Woburn Police Officer John "Jack" Maguire was killed in the line of duty responding to an armed robbery of the jewelry counter at Kohl's.

Chief Kelley said Tuesday when the report of Officer DeNapoli was shot came in, it was "unbelievable."
