Although it is Valentine’s Day, today is not all about romance.  Today is also about standing up for women and protecting them from violence including rape and rape culture.  One in three women are victims of rape and it is time to present a united front against such an atrocity. 

Today, February 14, marks the 15^th anniversary of “V-Day,” a movement to end violence against women.  V-Day promotes men and women across the globe to show their dedication to ending the violence.  This year, V-Day has asked that people come together and dance to show unity in the fight against violence. 

All over the world, groups of people have organized dance parties and flash mobs to show their support of this issue.  It may be a little too late for Woburn High to organize a dance or flash mob this year, but WMHS is seriously interested in becoming involved in the event next year.  Junior Jaye Morgan thinks that dancing for such an incredible cause is a great idea. 

“I would be interested because I think it’s an important cause to support and that it would be a fun way to protest,” said Morgan. 

Sophomore Theo Lichoulas agrees that protesting violence towards women is important and would be interested in participating in an organized movement.

“It is very humbling to be part of something bigger than yourself and I would love to be in a flash mob.  With Woburn’s extraordinary amount of town pride, we could come together to raise awareness for the situation at hand as well as have fun,” said Lichoulas. 

With that said, it seems like Woburn should start planning a way to show our support of this cause next year.  WMHS is ready, are you?
