POLICE LOG: Man Arrested for Assault With a Dangerous Weapon

Featured Incident May 20- At 11:44 a.m. police stopped a vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, that Malden Police were searching for based on an assault with a dangerous weapon in that town. Police pulled the vehicle over on Inwood Drive and searched the driver and passenger who were father and son. Police found a four-inch knife in the pocket of the son. He said he had pulled the knife in self defense because the other man “was coming at him with a pen.” Malden police did a drive-by with the victim for identification and that came out …

Officer Gibbons, who returned fire and wounded a suspect during the Sept. 6, 2011 incident at a jewelry store that left fellow officer Robert DeNapoli injured, was honored yesterday.

A Woburn officer who returned fire at a suspect after a fellow officer was shot was honored yesterday. United States Senators Elizabeth Warren and William M. Cowan, Congressman Edward Markey, United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, and U.S. Marshall John Gibbons recognized Woburn Police Officer Mark Gibbons with the Congressional Badge of Bravery award during a ceremony at the U.S. Federal Courthouse today.  Officer Gibbons was honored for his heroic acts following a jewelry store robbery in Woburn. On Sept. 6 of 2011, Officer Gibbons responded to the Four Corners jewelry robbery in which Officer Robert DeNapoli was shot several times by a suspect. Wounded MBTA Officer Donohue Talks About Ordeal Since Shoot-Out

MBTA Officer Richard Donohue, of Woburn, who was injured in a shoot out with the Boston Marathon bombers talks about that night, his injuries and his recovery.

MBTA Police Officer Richard Donohue, of Woburn, who was injured in a shoot-out night with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, continues to recover from his injuries. Last Friday the 33-year-old officer was moved from Mount Auburn Hospital to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, according to Boston.com. According to that story his recovery has entered the second phase and he will now concentrate on building strength in his legs so he can prepare to go home. During the shoot-out in Watertown, Donohue was struck in the leg and the bullet tore femoral artery, causing massive blood loss. The bullet is still in his leg. Woburn Police Remind Motorist to Buckle Up or Face Fines

The Woburn Police Department, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, are cracking down on unbuckled motorist and passengers as part of "Click It or Ticket."

The Woburn Police Department is partnering with other law enforcement agencies to ensure motorists and passengers are wearing their seat belts while on the road in the lead-up to the Memorial Day holiday.  According to a notice from the department, the Woburn Police Department, in partnership with the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s (EOPSS) Highway Safety Division (HSD), the State Police and many other local departments will take part in the 2013 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization from May 20 to June 2 and crack down on motorists who are not belted. “As we kick-off  the busy summer driving season it’s important that everyone buckles up every time they go out, both day and night – no excuses,” …

Sobriety Checkpoint Scheduled for Today, Tomorrow

State police on the lookout for people drinking and driving.

The Massachusetts State Police will be conducting a motor vehicle sobriety checkpoint Saturday, May 18 into Sunday, May 19, somewhere within Middlesex County, according to a state police press release. Police will be stopping vehicles to find potentially drunk drivers between somewhere in Middlesex County, which includes Woburn. As is normal practice, police do not disclose the hours or locations of the checkpoints. "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways," a State Police statement reads. We report all arrests included in the daily police log. May 15- At 5:24 p.m. a man came to the station to report past thefts. He said that over the past two years he and his family have noticed items missing from their Eastern Avenue home. He said the house hasn’t been broken into. The man said that two years ago he noticed two Razor scooters missing from his yard. Six months later a motor vehicle jump-start system was stolen and on May 12 of this year a Play Station Portable device went missing. The man said all the items totaled about $500. Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. There were 114 DUI fatalities in Massachusetts in 2012, which were 34 percent of traffic-related fatalities last year, according to Mothers …

How about really, REALLY hard penalties for people caught driving under the influence and proper enforcement of those penalties? Lowering the standard from 0.08 to 0.05 is not going to stop or prevent any drunk driving accidents.
