Farmer's Market Set to Open at Spence Farm Next Month

The wafting smell of newly plucked fruits and vegetables, the buzz of neighbors chatting in the fresh summertime air, a gathering of social and eatable proportions. It's that time of year again, and this year, Woburn will be in the mix.

The Woburn Farmer's Market will open for the first time at Spence Farm (41 Wyman St.) Sunday, June 5 and every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., through October 23.

“If vendors want to stay past October, we will, it all depends on weather,” clarified Woburn Agricultural Committee Chairman and coordinator of the market, Paul Medeiros.

Medeiros explained that an abundance of local vendors from Woburn and other surrounding towns will be at the market regularly throughout the season, each bringing a new food, creation or service to the table.

Some of the fruit and vegetable stands at the June 5 opening market include: Kimball Fruit Farm, Russell Farms and Heimlich's Nurseries. Bakers for opening day will be: Mamadou's Artisan Bakery, The Danish Pastry House and The Biscuit. Two cheese vendors will be alternating weeks at the market—Foxboro Cheese and West River Creamery. Fresh lobster and crab will be provided by Fancy Lobster out of Hull. Home-made hummus will be sold by Samira's Homemade Food and Coutts Specialty Foods will be providing syrups, jellies and the like. Cross-fed beef and pork will be supplied by Lyn-Dell Farm, specialty cuts that are “a lot better tasting than animals fed with processed feds and healthier,” according to Medeiros. Not to be over-looked are the crafts workers and other services at the market. There will be a pair of jeweler's, a couple hand-made soap sellers and a candle maker. On The Edge Sharpeners will also be joining the fray June 12.

All this will be accompanied by live folk music, hay rides, a petting zoo and three specialty tents that Medeiros organized to add more local flavor to the market.

“The first tent will be for restaurants that want to set up an area at the market,” explains Medeiros. “The second tent is for local artists, even high school, middle, or elementary school projects. And, the third tent is for a community group that wants to set up and reach out to those at the market.”

Medeiros and the rest of the organizers still want more vendors to join the festivities.

“By the middle of the summer, the market may be a lot more diverse and we are still looking for local companies to get involved,” said Medeiros.
