Weekly Question: What is Your Favorite 'Scandalous' Book?

In honor of Banned Books Week, we want to know what 'scandalous' book titles Wayland loves to read.

Sept. 30-Oct. 6 is Banned Books Week or, with a more positive twist, Celebrating the Freedom to Read Week.

When it comes to banning books, you might be surprised by the titles that have drawn the critical eye of censors. In fact, we're willing to bet that at least a few of the books you greatly respect have found themselves labeled as "scandalous" and banned from shelves and the eyes of impressionable readers.

"The Great Gatsby," by F. Scott Fitzgerald; "The Grapes of Wrath," by John Steinbeck; "Beloved," by Toni Morrison; "Gone with the Wind," by Margaret Mitchell; and "To Kill a Mockingbird," by Harper Lee are just a handful of the classic titles that have been censored.

Check out this list of Banned and Challenged Classics from among the Radcliffe Publishing Company's top 100 books of the 20th century, and then check out some of these other titles we mentioned in an earlier article.

Tell us: What banned books do you cherish? What does the freedom to read mean to you? Let's celebrate those scandalous books that have touched our lives.

I'm going to get this party started and note one of my favorites: "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. This book broke my heart, yet was so beautifully, beautifully written that I found myself relishing individual phrases and sentences. If you've read it, you likely know the feeling of repulsion interwoven with that irrepressible urge to keep reading. The book reveals and explores the tension between physical and emotional survival in a way that I'm not sure I've ever seen before or since.
