Woburn Bell Will Toll for Newtown Victims

It has been one week since the lives of 26 children and adults were taken in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, CT. As people all over the world grapple with the tragic events of Dec. 14, America's churches hope to provide some solace this morning.

Woburn's North Congregational Church on Main Street will ring its bell 26 times at 9:30 a.m. in honor of the victims. Along with the church located in the center of the city, churches all across the country will chime in.

Rev. Marian Williams said the parish will "pray for [the victims'] families, friends, and the entire Newtown community."

"The people of Newtown won't hear our bell here in Woburn, but across the country, bells like ours will be tolling in harmony and sympathy with theirs," said Rev. Williams. "May the bells honor those who died and remind us that we must work for change so that such devastating events do not happen ever again."

Patch will also do its part in memorializing the Sandy Hook victims today. At 9:30 a.m., all Patch.com sites, including Woburn, will go dark. All Patch and AOL websites, as well as many others across the web, will go black and post this brief message:

"We are observing a National Moment of Silence for the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy."
