Will Waxy O'Connor's Open By Thanksgiving?

You Asked and Patch Answers... The Irish pub had promised to be open before the holiday in Woburn. Will it?

When Spuds closed in February of 2011, it left a restaurant spot vacant off of Montvale Avenue.

And it's still vacant... Despite promises of having a new eatery opened by Thanksgiving.

Now the city's License Commission has given prospective tenant Waxy O'Connor's an ultimatum—open by January or you lose your liquor license.

The Irish pub first made moves to come into the city in the closed Spuds building in March of this year. But the pub's progress is moving along slowly.

"Building Commissioner Thomas Quinn has been on top of this project from the get go," said Paul Medeiros of the License Commission. "[He] was dissatisfied with the effort and had documentation that there was very little progress made towards getting the project completed and open for business by Thanksgiving as promised."

Medeiros said that the board learned that "the building was wide open and unsecured to weather or vandals."

Based on the slow progress and the "disingenuousness of the petition," the board voted last month to pull the liquor license if Waxy's is not open by January.

"We also voted that they clean up the property and secure it throughout the construction period," said Medeiros.
