Woburn Couple Moving Back Home for New Business Venture

Michael and Karen DeRienzo are opening a children's consignment shop on Montvale Ave.

Michael DeRienzo has seen firsthand over the last several decades how to successfully run a business in Woburn. Now, he hopes to take his experience and put it to good use.

DeRienzo, whose family has owned and operated the Woburn Bowladrome for the last 73 years, is opening a children’s consignment shop with his wife Karen. The shop, called Penny Lane, will open its doors on Sunday in its location at 38 Montvale Ave., right next to Bowladrome.

Since he can remember, DeRienzo has worked at the Bowladrome. Through that experience, DeRienzo said he learned what it takes to connect with the community and increase business as a result.

“The biggest thing I learned is about interacting with people every day, the customer service skills,” said DeRienzo. “I learned the ins and outs of how a business runs. It’s about what the people want, and keeping up with the times.”

The goal of Penny Lane is to provide like-new children’s clothing items and toys at a low cost to the customer.

What DeRienzo said sets his shop apart from others in the area is that he and his wife offer complete outfits for sale, rather than forcing patrons to buy clothing items individually. As a result, DeRienzo said customers will get more for their dollar.

“With this economy, what we wanted to do is help out the community by giving them the opportunity to buy nice, top of the line items at consignment prices,” said DeRienzo.

The grand opening for Penny Lane is set for Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

With the finishing touches still being put on the shop, it’s been a busy week for Michael and Karen DeRienzo. Despite some stressful times, it’s been worth the trouble.

“It’s been a sleepless week, but that’s part of running a business,” said DeRienzo. “We’re really excited to be opening in Woburn.”
