5T: Holiday Festival On Common To Be Held Saturday

Here are five things you need to know today in Woburn:

1) Holiday Festival

The city's annual Holiday Festival on the Common will be held this Saturday on the common. Join in the fun as vendors start to set up around 3 p.m. The common is already filled with the traditional Woburn decorations and groups are ready to perform on the City Hall steps. Mayor Scott Galvin is scheduled to read the Night Before Christmas poem around 5 p.m. After that, the holiday lights will go on! 

2) Happy Thanksgiving, students!

The Thanksgiving holiday means that students are getting out of school early today. The high school kids are first, with dismissal at 11 a.m. Then the middle schools, 11:30 a.m., followed by the elementary schools at noon. The city's public schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday in observance of the national holiday. 

3) Cloudy skies

According to the National Weather Service's specialized forecast just for Woburn, it's going to be a slightly cloudly day as we all prepare for Thursday's holiday. But don't worry, there shouldn't be any rain coming out of those clouds. Expect temperatures to be in the 50s.

Let's take a walk through Woburn's history, shall we? Some headlines in newspapers regarding Nov. 21 events in Woburn were:

• 1921—Sheppard, Woburn, Pins K.O. On O'Neil of Nashua—Johnny Sheppard of Woburn knocked out "Doddy" O'Neil in five rounds in Lynn.
• 1924—Arraign Man For Setting Woburn Fire—George Holden of Chelsea was arraigned on charges he set a Highland Street two-family home on fire.
• 1959—Woburn Tops Danvers, 16-0—Woburn football wins, brings record to 6-1.
