5T: Woburn's Leather Business Halted... In What Year?

Here are five things you need to know today in Woburn:

 

1) Crosswalk installation

Ellen Callahan Doucette, the city's solicitor, briefed the Traffic Commission Thursday on the legality of installing crosswalks. According to Doucette's opinion, the Traffic Commission does have the authority to install a crosswalk. The opinion also states that a crosswalk cannot be installed in the city without the Traffic Commission's approval.

2) Movies at the Senior Center

The Senior Center will host a free movie today at 10 a.m. The feature will be "Roman Holiday." 

 

3) Warmer temperatures

According to the National Weather Service's pinpointed forecast for Woburn, we will see the sun today! And we can expect some "warm" winter temperatures, as the mercury rises to 55 degrees today. That's 10 degrees more than our average high for Dec. 3 historically. But it's not the warmest, our record high in Woburn for Dec. 3 was 71 degrees in 2009.

5) Headlines in history

Let's take a walk through Woburn's history, shall we? Some headlines in newspapers regarding Dec. 1 events in Woburn were:

  • 1889—Woburn Deserted—Over 1,600 leather workers are locked out of the city's factories; only one remained in operation.
  • 1908—State Flag Raised Over Woburn School—For the first time in the state, an American flag was joined by the Massachusetts flag. It was hung over the new $150,000 Woburn High School building.
  • 1923—Mr. and Mrs. David H. Lewis of Woburn Wed 50 Years
