All Three City Pools Open, But Rec Programs Canceled Today

All Recreation Department activities canceled because of the expected heat. Pools will remain open for regular hours.

With today’s temperature headed for the stratosphere, you have from 10 o’clock this morning to 7 o’clock tonight to take a refreshing dip in any of the city’s three municipal pools.

Those are the regular weekday hours at the Rocco Schelzi Pool on Main Street, between Ferullo Field and St. Anthony’s Church; the Cox Pool on Green Street, in front of the Shamrock Elementary School; and Golden Pool in east Woburn, near Calvary Cemetery.

On Saturdays, the Schelzi Pool is open from noon until 7 p.m.; the other two municipal pools, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Sundays, all three pools are open from noon to 5 p.m.

Pool hours are not being extended because of the heat, according to city Recreation Director Rory Lindstrom. The Saturday hours at the north Woburn pool have been adjusted for the summer, compared with the other two city pools, Lindstrom told Woburn Patch, based on residents’ requests.

Lindstrom is concerned about the lifeguards extending their workday in the extreme heat. They’re at their posts all day already, she said.

In addition, keeping a pool open for another hour “wouldn’t do much” to help cool city residents, Lindstrom said.

To swim at any city pool, you need to buy a pass—a wristband, actually—available at the Recreation Department in City Hall and wear the wristband at the pool. Only Woburn residents may get a wristband. The seasonal rate for a family is $50.

If you’re thinking about swimming elsewhere in the city—Horn Pond might come to mind—nix that thought. Swimming is not allowed there, according to police, because it is a drinking water supply area.

Because of today’s expected heat, all other Recreation Department programs have been canceled for the day.
