While the family wants to keep the procession intimate with only family, the community can honor Doherty by lining the streets along the procession route from Costello Funeral Home to the church starting at 10:30 a.m.

Winchester native and former Navy SEAL Doherty was among the four Americans killed while serving U.S. Ambassador of Libya John Christopher Stevens at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Doherty was a 1988 Winchester High School graduate, and his former classmates are encouraging residents to line the procession route to honor "our own American hero".

The procession route is as follows:

  • Leave Costello Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m.,
  • Travel down Washington Street,
  • Continue onto Mount Vernon Street,
  • Travel around the rotary and up Church Street,
  • Take a short detour onto Glen Road, where Doherty grew up,
  • And continue up High Street to St. Eulelia's Church.

Doherty's former classmates said in an online request, "Please join us as we give a great son, brother, friend, and patriot the sendoff he so richly deserves. The Doherty's are most grateful for the support of their hometown."

Family and friends are invited to the visitation today from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. Eulalia Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations in Doherty's memory to be made online to the Navy SEAL foundation or the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
