Five Police and Fire Incidents That Had Woburn Talking

A look back at the week in police news in Woburn.

From a very persistent salesman to the theft of an antique firearm, these five stories and Police Log entries had people talking on our Facebook page and readers clicking links this week.

Saturday, July 2—At 9:10 p.m., a Brentwood Road couple reported receiving phone calls from a man named “Mike” who was trying to sell them “Social Security death benefits.” According to police, at 9 p.m., the man came to their door and was “waving papers at them.” The man had fled the area before police arrived. He was described by the victim as a tall, white male with dark hair, probably around 40-years-old.

Monday, July 4—At 3:14 p.m., Woburn Police and Fire responded to the High Street area for a report of black smoke. According to police, emergency personnel blocked off High Street when officers saw that a truck was on fire. The truck fire, which was located in the rear of the Chute Oil property, was extinguished by firefighters. Police are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Tuesday, July 5—At 11:05 p.m., police were dispatched to High Street for a “possible overdose.” According to police, a 14-year-old girl was at an underage drinking party and consumed an “unknown amount of vodka.” The girl was taken to Winchester Hospital. Police said the girl’s friends were not intoxicated, but were with the teen while she was drinking. The teens’ parents were notified of the situation. 

Wednesday, July 6—At 10:29 a.m., a woman reported receiving a harassing phone call from a man with a Jamaican accent stating she won $1 million. The woman reportedly said to the man, “Do you think I’m an idiot?” The man allegedly threatened the woman before hanging up.

Wednesday, July 6—At 4:20 p.m., a detective responded to a Mishawum Road residence for a report of a house break between July 1 and 6. According to police, a door was damaged and officers observed many items thrown on the floor in the home. The victim told police that an antique ammunition box, an antique pistol with a pearl handle, a World War II German red and black dagger and jewelry was taken from the home.
