Five Things You Need to Know Today, April 11

What famous space shuttle mission launched on this day in history?

"Five Things You Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. Let us know what you think of the feature in the comments section.

Today is Monday, April 11. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Summer for a day!: The National Weather Service is forecasting—are you ready for this?—temperatures in the mid 70s today! Weather forecasters also believe it could get as high as 77 today. If we reach 77, we'll break the record high for April 11 in Woburn, which was 75 in 1987.
  2. Leash the pooches: As the weather gets warmer, we tend to take the dogs out for longer walks or to parks to play. But don’t forget, the city of Woburn has a leash law in effect. Make sure your dogs remain on leashes while on city streets or parks, and please, clean up after your puppies!
  3. Packing your lunch: Tomorrow marks the special “no trash lunch” day in city schools. The , including the no-trash lunch. Malcolm White students encourage all schools to take part in the no-trash lunch by using reusable containers and cloth napkins. Can you pack a no-trash lunch?
  4. In case you missed it: Woburn Patch reporter Nadine Wandzilak introduced us to Alberto Borjas, a Woburn resident, who works at the Woburn Mall. Borjas is the creative genius behind the mall’s holiday displays, including the fanciful Easter spring garden that was just “planted” this month. Read all about this resident here.
  5. Houston, we’ve had a problem here: On this day in 1970, the Apollo 13 space mission successfully launched. But two days later, the space shuttle faced the problem of an exploded oxygen tank. The astronauts aboard the shuttle were forced to endure freezing temperatures and one-fifths water rations, as they performed the difficult task of getting back to Earth before the power supply ran out. Six days after the launch, the astronauts re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere and parachuted into the Pacific Ocean. The Apollo 13 space mission was later popularized in the Ron Howard film starring Tom Hanks.
