5) The first inauguration: On this day in 1789, George Washington was inaugurated as the first president on the United States. Elected in February with the constitution taking effect in March, Congress sent word to Washington that he had won the presidency. On April 30th, Washington crossed the Hudson River and was sworn into office at Federal Hall on Wall Street. Washington then read his inaugural address to Congress, before the evening celebration began and ended with 13 skyrockets and a 13 shot cannon salute.
