Today is Thursday, April 7. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. More sun!: We are particularly pleased with the National Weather Service forecast for today, which says we will be overloaded with sunshine. With mostly sunny skies and a light breeze, it’ll be a brisk, spring day today. Temperatures will probably stay in the high 40s.
  2. Big day in sports: If you are a fan, you won’t want to miss this afternoon on Montvale Avenue. The boys’ and girls’ tennis teams, boys’ and girls’ track teams and girls’ lacrosse team will all be in action today after 3:30 p.m.
  3. Shamrock PTO meets: The will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Green Street school building.
  4. In case you missed it: Three men indicted on charges related to the shooting death of were in court yesterday for arraignment. The three men plead not guilty to all charges in the , with two being held without bail.  
  5. The Duke is honored: On this day in 1970, John Wayne, the quintessential cowboy, won his only Academy Award for acting for his portrayal in the movie True Grit. The star was known for his tough guy cowboy characters and starred in such films as Sands of Iwo Jima, The Alamo, Stagecoach and The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance. Wayne died of complications from stomach cancer nine years later at the age of 72.
