2) Did you know?

That James Walker, a man born in Woburn on Aug. 16, 1853, would later become president of Harvard University? Walker was also a Unitarian minister during his lifetime. Although he wasn't looked upon as a great leader at Harvard, the university did make important advances, including adding buildings for programs and starting music courses.

3) Event spotlight

Today is Mayor Scott Galvin's Field Day for kids. The Mayor and the Recreation Department are hosting the end-of-summer celebration for kids, which includes activities like dunk tank, moonwalk, magician, face-painting and performances. The fun begins at 11 a.m.

4) In case you missed it

When police were called for a report of two women arguing, they probably weren't expecting what they got—an attack from a woman on a drug high, who caused thousands of dollars of damage to a police cruiser, and attacked patrolmen. .

5) Gold rush

On this day in 1896, a man salmon fishing in Canada's Yukon Territory spots gold nuggets in the creek bed. The discovery would lead to the gold rush in the American west. The news of gold spread across the country and over two years nearly 50,000 miners went west looking for gold. Between the late 1800s and 1966, large operations mined about $250 million worth of gold. Now, about 200 small gold mines continue to operate in the Yukon Territory.
