2) 'A Civil Action'

The Internet is full of amazing artifacts and pieces of information. Curious about the "A Civil Action" case in Woburn? We were researching the case and found this document from August 27, 1984—it says that the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services believes that the number of cases of childhood leukemia was "significantly higher than expected" and that there should be environmental testing.

5) The most powerful eruption 

On this day in 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption occurred on Krakatau, a small island in Indonesia. The eruption killed 36,000 people, and was heard thousands of miles away. The volcano had begun to simmer in May, but completely blew apart on Aug. 27. Although thousands were killed, many were killed by the resulting tsunamis and not the actual explosion. Krakatau is still active today, as well as 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
