Today is Monday, August 22. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Sunny start: It’ll likely be a sunny start to the week, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS is forecasting a chance of showers before 10 a.m., but mostly sunny skies for most of today in Woburn. Temperatures will be in the upper 70s. 
  2. City Council: The City Council’s committees will meet tonight to discuss several subjects, including the . Meeting starts at 7 p.m.
  3. Rec Dept staff: Check out this terrific Facebook photo of the Recreation Department’s summer staff. These young adults worked hard all summer with many of your kids and we tip our keyboard to them!

  5. Breaking the color barrier: On this day in 1950, Althea Gibson became the first African-American to compete in a U.S. Tennis Association match. Gibson also traveled with the Harlem Globetrotters, playing tennis in between quarters during games, and eventually became part of the women’s golf tour. She was named to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1971.
