Five Things You Need to Know Today, August 23

Tips to help start your day.

"Five Things You Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. Let us know what you think of the feature in the comments section.

Today is Tuesday, August 23. Here are five things you need to know:

1.  Today will be a sparking summer day. The National Weather Service is predicting sun, a high temperature around 78 degrees and a light breeze. Perfect to get outside if you can, even for just a stroll at lunchtime!

 2.  Imagine going to school in the summer—today—for “Popsicles with the Principal?” New Principal Eric Stark has invited Malcolm White School students and their families to the school today, Tuesday, Aug. 23, between 3 and 5 p.m., to introduce himself to them. He started his job after school ended in June. The gathering will be held outside, in front of the school, if the weather is good.  Stark succeeds Peter Roketenetz, who is now city-wide director of educational technology.

 3.  Get in you last few days of swimming at any of the city’s three municipal pools. The Schelzi pool in north Woburn, on Main Street, between Ferullo Field and St. Anthony Church; the Cox pool on Green Street, in front of the Shamrock School and the Golden Pool on Central Street in east Woburn will close at end of day Friday, so lifeguards can get themselves ready, Rec Director Rory Lindstrom has told WOburn Patch, to go back to school themselves.

4.  Even though the weather’s still summery, school will start in just over two weeks. Before students and parents throng to school supply store aisles, it may be time to start thinking about school supplies now. Principal Christopher Heath has posted a list of supplies that students will need, by grade, on the school website, accessible from woburnpublicschools.com.

 5.  Cooking lessons: On this day in 1902, Fannie Farmer, author of the well-known and often-used cookbook, “The Boston Cooking-School Cookbook,” opened the Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston. Farmer is best known for advocating the use of standardized measurements in recipes and educating medical professionals on the importance of nutrition.
