Hurricane planning, school calendars and more.

"Five Things You Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. Let us know what you think of the feature in the comments section.

Today is Friday, August 26. Here are five things you need to know:

2.  What to do to prepare for Hurricane Irene?  City officials are meeting this morning at 10:30 to discuss emergency preparedness. Check Woburn Patch later today for details. State officials and weather forecasters expect Irene to make landfall along the southern New England coast late on Sunday, according to a press release issued yesterday by Mayor Scott Galvin. Officials suggest that Massachusetts residents have all plans and supplies in place by Saturday afternoon.

3.  After the hurricane, school will start in less than two weeks, on Sept. 8. The 2011-2012 school calendar is available now as a link on the woburnpublicschools.com website. One change:  after the winter holiday, students and teachers will return to school on Jan. 3, 2012, a Tuesday. Woburnpatch will have much more information closer to the big day.

4.  Looking back: Remember when the city was hit by water in a different form—a —right after Christmas, 2010; dicey weather, including a , in mid and late-January; and more snow in February? We’ve got stories and pictures.

5.  Celebrating equality: Today is Women's Equality Day. The designation was made in 1971 after Congresswoman Bella Abzug introduced legislation. Every president has published a proclamation for Women's Equality Day since then. August 26 was chosen to mark the anniversary of the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution that gave women the right to vote.
