Today is Monday, August 29. Here are five things you need to know:

1. Good day, sunshine! After a dark and stormy Sunday, today should be sunny, with a high near 80, according to the National Weather Service, with a much gentler wind blowing at between 9 and 18 miles per hour.

4. Looking back—Remember, the playground next to the police station is still under construction. The climbing equipment has been removed and new equipment ordered, according to Recreation Director Rory Lindstrom in an The equipment presented safety issues, she said. The new equipment should be coming in about a week.

5. End of a global conflict: On this day in 1945, United States General Douglas MacArthur left for Japan to accept the surrender of the Japanese. The surrender came after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and after the Soviet Union entered the Pacific theater. The official surrender occurred aboard the battleship Missouri on Sept. 2, when officials from the Japanese government signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, marking the end of World War II.
