Five Things You Need to Know Today, Dec. 12

Here are five things you need to know today:

1) More sunny days -- We should continue to see the sun today and the temperature should rise a few degrees. The next chance of precipitation – rain – is Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service.

2) A pride of lions (no tigers or bears) has just moved into the new Goodyear Elementary School. Not to worry. The lion is the new school mascot, chosen by students. Several lions now grace the wall outside the school’s boiler room. The big cats form the foundation of the school’s culture and character development program, school Principal Christopher Heath told Woburn Patch, and encourage students, Heath said, to do “pawsitive” things.

3) Several City Council subcommittees will meet tonight in City Hall, starting at 7 p.m.  Among the agenda items:  an order to raise the salary of the mayor’s administrative aide, Marie Lingblom, from $48,960 to $57,000.  Mayor Scott Galvin proposed the increase because Lingblom “handles numerous duties” and the raise is “in line with the salary of mayoral assistants in prior administrations,” according to a letter from Galvin to the City Council.

4) In case you missed it -- A burned out one apartment in a 12-unit complex on Lexington Street and knotted traffic near Four Corners Thursday around 5 p.m.  The fire was contained to one unit; that resident’s cat perished in the fire.

5)  Cathy Rigby, the former Olympic gymnast and the first American, male or female, to win a medal at a World Gymnastics Championship, in 1970 – a silver medal on the balance beam -- was born on this date in 1952. Rigby vaulted from gymnast to TV as a commentator for ABC Sports and then to the stage, as Peter Pan.
