Five Things You Need to Know Today, Dec. 6

Here are five things you need to know today:

1) Bring an umbrella—not a snow shovel or broom—with you todayShowers are likely, according to the National Weather Service. With a high near 59 degrees, we'll see rain this time instead of snow.

2) Keep looking: No sightings have been reported of a dog that slipped his collar while he was out walking Saturday with his new owner on Pheasant Lane. The gray and white sheltie is about 3 years old, with one blue eye and one brown eye. He took off into conservation land, according to his owner, Ann Luchini. Ryder has an identification chip; even a report of a sighting would help, Luchini said. If you see Ryder, call 781-935-2759. He may or may not answer to that name.

3) Learn how to de-stress: this holiday season. Parents, learn techniques for yourself and your children, who may be Santa'd out. A de-stressing workshop will be held tonight at the Joyce Middle School, from 7 to 9 p.m.  It's free.

4) In case you missed it: a Christmas tree was lit Sunday evening in memory of John "Jack" Maguire, the Woburn police officer killed in the line of duty this past Dec. 26. People are invited to add ornaments and decorations to the tree, which stands on the grass at the end of the parking lot across from the post office on Washington Street.

5) Fun fact: The first sound recording was made by Thomas Edison on Dec. 6, 1877, into his phonograph machine. Do you know what he recorded? "Mary had a Little Lamb."
