"Five Things You Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. Let us know what you think of the feature in the comments section.

Today is Wednesday, Feb. 23. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. A wee bit warmer: The sun is expected to stay with us a bit longer, as the National Weather Service is forecasting sunny skies until Thursday. Today temperatures may hit the mid-30s, with a slight northwesterly wind in the air. While that temperature is just about average for Woburn this time of year, the record high for Feb. 23 was hit in 1990 when it reached 65 degrees in the city.
  2. History is present: The city’s Historical Commission will meet tonight at City Hall, starting at 7 p.m. Items on the agenda include the community development block grant, the historical plaque program, cell towers, and the energy retrofit of City Hall.
  3. Hockey action: The Woburn High boys’ ice hockey team, which , will take part in the Irish-American Shootout tonight at the . The Tanners are expected to play Milton tonight at 8 p.m.
  4. In case you missed it: was filled with action from the holiday weekend, as officers were dispatched all over the city for a variety of reasons. One woman reported another was threatening her with “voodoo powers,” while a theft victim reported the thief was taunting him on Facebook using the victim’s iPod. Several officers were called to the Red Roof Inn over the weekend to deal with a party gone wild, and a patrolman visited a couple who complained of harassment. While the officer was at their apartment, he saw that someone left dog “poop” on their doorstep. .
  5. Yummy!: On this day in 1896, Leo Hirshfield began selling a delicious little oblong chocolate candy called a Tootsie Roll. Hirshfield made the candies by hand and wrapped them, selling them for a penny apiece in New York City. The chewy candy was affectionately named after his daughter, Clara, who was nicknamed Tootsie. The candy empire, Tootsie Roll Industries, strictly adheres to Hirshfield’s original recipe and makes more than 62 million Tootsie Rolls a day. We here at Woburn Patch are forever grateful to Hirshfield and his family recipes for giving us one of the tastiest candies around.
