5) The kidnapping of a … horse?: On this day in 1983, armed men stormed into a stable in Ireland and stole the Irish championship race horse named Shergar. The five-year-old thoroughbred stallion was worth $13.5 million at the time of his horse-napping. A ransom was asked, but it was never paid. And Shergar was never seen again.
