Today is Wednesday, Feb. 9. Here are five things you need to know:

  1. Today gives me the chills: Literally! The National Weather Service is expecting temperatures to only be in the 20s today in Woburn and the wind chill could get as low as -2. Get those scarves out, you’ll need them today. But the sun will be shining, so that should bring out a few smiles.
  2. Goodyear construction: The Goodyear School Building Committee will meet this afternoon at 4:05 p.m. at . According to officials, the school is on time and on budget. Today’s meeting will update the committee on construction and any outstanding deadlines or schedules.
  3. Chat time: An will meet at the today from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The group is an informal way to practice your English speaking skills. This free group will meet for eight weeks.
  4. In case you missed it: Woburn and Stoneham firefighters yesterday. The fire departments and Massachusetts State Police closed down two left-lanes of the highway for less than an hour while they dealt with the fire. Check out a couple of photographs and a short video of the scene here.
  5. The chips are down: On this day in 1950, Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-WI) gave his historic “Communists in Government Service” speech in front of the Women’s Republic Club in Wheeling, WV. The speech contained McCarthy’s famous statement: “Today we are engaged in a final, all-out battle between communistic atheism and Christianity. The modern champions of communism have selected this as the time. And, ladies and gentlemen, the chips are down—they are truly down." The speech, which alleged that there were 205 members of the government in the Communist party or acting as spies, started a series of Senate hearings regarding communism in the U.S.
