1) Snow likely: It’ll be a messy day today, as the National Weather Service is forecasting rain and snow throughout the day. Expect the precipitation to turn to all rain for the evening commute, probably after 4 p.m., says the NWS. The high temp will be 41 degrees, and we may see winds as high as 25 to 28 miles per hour.

2) Mayoral thank you: Mayor Scott Galvin publicly thanked the public for taking part in his inauguration ceremony Jan. 2. Click here to read his letter to the public. (Link will take you off Woburn Patch.)

3) Event spotlight: The Parent-Teacher Organization will hold its monthly meeting tonight at the school. Meeting begins at 7 p.m. and is scheduled to be one hour.

4) In case you missed it: quickly extinguished a fully-involved truck fire on Poole Street early Wednesday morning. The truck’s owner snapped a picture of the vehicle in flames and sent it to Woburn Patch yesterday.

5) A deadly blizzard: On this day in 1888, 235 people died due to a sudden blizzard across the Northwest Plains. Many of those who perished in the blizzard were children trying to walk home from school in the blizzard conditions. While some teachers were able to keep their students in the school buildings, others had already dismissed children. Many got lost due to the conditions and died of frostbite.
