5) The real killer is revealed: On this day in 1990, law enforcement officials learn that Charles Stuart of Reading killed his wife, Carol, in October. Stuart blamed the crime on an African-American man, claiming the man robbed and shot both Stuarts in Boston. Charles Stuart recovered from his injuries, but Carol succumbed to her wounds. Matthew Stuart, Charles’ brother, who helped carry evidence away from the murder scene thinking it was an insurance scam, stepped forward and pointed the finger at his brother. Charles Stuart, knowing that the testimony was coming, committed suicide by jumping off the Tobin Bridge.
